“We Choose to live in a town full of people alone”

Have been back in LA for two weeks now, scratching my head, trying to find similarities between Larnaca and California. I am sure in the process, beneath all the differences, similarities will unfold. But, for now my only goal is to draw a picture of LA through my eyes and my experiences.
Almost forty million people live in California, four million of those in Los Angeles. Cyprus is about a million, our Larnaca fifty-two thousand. You got the picture.
My friend’s daughter just moved to LA, she’s here to be an actress, already in love with the city. What’s not to love? We have everything 24/7 at our feet, some of those things need no human interaction, just a click of a button. Yes, we are spoiled. We live in a city that every time you walk out the door you never know who you will meet and which turn your life will take. We have unlimited access to film screening before they get released in theaters. Not to mention how sight tracked you can get when you start chasing all the exclusive events and functions all over town. Celebrities from current to yesterday’s news are everywhere, living their day-to-day life just like the rest of us. If you are sitting next to one at a restaurant, you will most likely share a life story or two. You get bored, tired of the city’s hecticness and need a change of scenery, the ocean is forty minutes away and snow about an hour and a half. Or you can do the easy fix, go for a walk on the Hollywood Hills and breathe some fresh air, maybe catch a sunset.
Everything in life has a price, living in Los Angeles means you need to accept that you are alone. At the end of the day you are on your own. Why? People come and go, some literally and some are life experiences. The majority of people living here are not from here. They moved here, chasing a dream. They have a deadline, their visa. The solid ones range from immigrants working 24/7 to make ends meet, strangling actors, directors, musicians and so on, working 24/7 waiting for their big break, entrepreneurs are everywhere, and of course the working film and music industry people who also work 24/7. 24/7 is the theme, we work 24/7 and some work at dead end jobs, just to make ends meet. We spend most of our time in our cars holding a coffee cup, we do everything online, some even grocery shop there. It’s that constant trying to win time, so you can work more, and of course spend more. And let’s not forget about the pets, Los Angels alone has three point five million registered pets. Have nothing against pets, raised one for fifteen years. Pets fill a void.
Don’t get me wrong, I love LA, have been living here longer than home. I love what LA has to offer. Wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t cross paths with people from all walks of life. Wouldn’t know my needs and what makes me thrive. When it comes to my close circle of friends, we make it work. We know how LA can get, we make a point to free our time, spend quality time. Plus I get to come to Larnaca once a year, ground myself, and appreciate what our community has to offer.
As for my friend’s daughter, she said to me the other day, “It’s a great town, I love it here, but it can get very lonely.”
Awareness is the key to a balance life.
